The second largest reef in the world, the Belize Barrier Reef is also one of the most popular Belize snorkeling destinations. The reef’s protection from the turbulent sea creates a clear and calm waters that made Belize snorkeling ideal. Most of the area inside the reef is less than 20 feet deep, and with crystal clear water it makes an outstanding natural aquarium that you can take part of. In just 6-10 feet of water you'll find an amazing diversity of marine life.

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve of Belize Barrier Reef is one of the most popular snorkeling spots, about 10 miles north of Caye Caulker. The Hol Chan is a natural cut in the reef, about 25-30 feet deep. A diverse amount of marine life can be found there, it is strictly monitored since this ecosystem is home of the most species found in the Belize Barrier Reef. Established in 1987, Hol Chan is the first reserve of its kind in Central America.

Just to the south of Hol Chan is another popular Belize snorkeling site called Shark-Ray Alley. Shark-Ray Alley is a shallow cut in the reef where snorkelers are almost assured of encountering nurse sharks and southern stingrays. Both Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are within Ambergris Caye. Other major snorkeling sites include Mata Rocks Cut and the Mexico Rocks.
